BLACKPINK's Jennie was at the center of a viral video controversy following her performance at the Summer Sonic 2026 festival in Tokyo on August 14. The footage, which circulated widely online, sparked speculation about a possible wardrobe malfunction. Now, reports indicate that millions of viewers who shared this video could face significant criminal charges and prison sentences in South Korea.
Korean outlet Law Talk News, as reported by Koreaboo on August 21, 2026, stated that individuals who shared the "explicit video" could face punishment under Article 14 of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes. This applies regardless of the video's authenticity. The potential penalties are severe, including up to seven years in prison or a fine of up to ₩50.0 million KRW (approximately $35,900 USD) for filming or distributing such material against the victim's will. Even those who merely reshared the video through messaging apps and online communities face the same maximum seven-year sentence. Furthermore, individuals who saved the video for personal viewing are not exempt from legal repercussions. If the content was posted for profit or to gain views, perpetrators could face an "enhanced sentence of at least three years' imprisonment."
Jennie's agency, OA Entertainment, had previously announced on August 18, 2026, that they would be taking legal action against those found "maliciously editing or re-processing the artist's physical features" as well as "distributing specific photos or video clips" and content infringing on her privacy and personal rights. The social media account believed to have initially posted the viral video was suspended as of August 19, 2026.
The definitive authenticity of the viral video from the Tokyo performance remains unconfirmed; it is still debated whether it was a genuine wardrobe malfunction or AI manipulation. No other unconfirmed claims are being presented at this time.
